Donald Ross Designed Asheville Municipal Golf Course
As part of its sponsorship and support of Skyview Golf Tournament, Explore Asheville is collaborating with four influential golfers to highlight the historic 64th annual tournament on July 9–11, 2024. The partnerships aim to celebrate the tournament’s legacy and raise awareness of it as a premier golf destination in Asheville to a new generation of players.
The following influencers will compete in the tournament while showcasing their experiences in Asheville:
“We are excited to once again support the Skyview Golf Tournament and Asheville as a coveted mountain golf destination," said Vic Isley, President and CEO of Explore Asheville. "These collaborations are key to bringing more visibility to the tournament's rich history as the longest running Black-owned golf event and its future success."
The Skyview Golf Tournament will be held at the historic Donald Ross-designed Asheville Municipal Golf Course (MUNI) this week and welcomes residents and visitors alike to watch the tournament live onsite. “MUNI” was the first course in North Carolina to integrate racially and has been the home of Skyview since 1960. The Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority invested more than $1.4 million through its Tourism Product Development Fund to partner with the City of Asheville on renovations and improvements totaling $3.5 million.
"From its beginnings over six decades ago, the Skyview Golf Tournament has grown into a beacon of inclusive competition and community spirit,” said Matthew Bacoate, Manager of the Skyview Golf Tournament. “Through partnerships like this with Explore Asheville, we look forward to continuing to inspire generations of golfers, champion diversity in the sport and make a positive impact on our community.”
This year’s Skyview Golf Tournament is expected to have more than 160 players including up and comer HBCU players, with 60-65 professionals competing for a $40,000 purse and $6,500 first place prize. The tournament also supports local initiatives such as the Billy E.P. Gardenhight Scholarship Fund, which has awarded over $180,000 in scholarships to deserving students from underserved backgrounds.
Asheville and the Western North Carolina region boast over 40 championship golf courses, including renowned designs by Donald Ross and picturesque resort courses. The destination’s natural beauty set against the Blue Ridge Mountains provides a stunning backdrop for golf enthusiasts and travelers alike.
