Remember, Honor, and Celebrate Juneteenth
2024 Celebration Focuses on Education, Appreciation, and Awareness

Juneteenth commemorates the official end of slavery on June 19, 1865, when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached enslaved people in Texas—two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the proclamation. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Association of Asheville and Buncombe County, in partnership with the City of Asheville, is hosting a weeklong Juneteenth Celebration featuring educational and festive events across Asheville. Explore the event schedule below and join in learning about and celebrating the liberation of enslaved people.
