Buncombe County Emergency Rental Assistance Program is Now Accepting Applications

According to a study by Bowen National Research, nearly half of all Buncombe County households are “cost-burdened,” spending more than 30 percent of their income on housing. While nearly two in five households are “severely cost-burdened," spending 50 percent or more of their income to meet housing costs. 

Financial support is now available to Buncombe County residents. This $7.9 million fund is an important resource available to eligible county residents and we encourage partners to share this information with your human resource officers, staff, partners, and neighbors.

Rental Assistance is Now Available to Eligible Buncombe County Residents

After a pause in emergency rental assistance last September, Buncombe County has accepted additional state funding and is once again taking applications. Community members who need financial assistance with rent, mortgage, or utilities and have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic may apply for financial assistance. Most payments are made directly to vendors (landlords/mortgage companies/ utility providers) and not to the individual. Individuals may apply more than once if additional support is needed. This program does not cover payments for phone, cable, credit card, insurance, or anything duplicating other federal assistance programs.

To qualify to receive relief funds earmarked for the Housing Assistance Program, households must meet have experienced financial hardship during COVID-19 and meet the annual income limits:

Please fill out the form and return to Buncombe County Health and Human Services or call (828) 250-5500 to connect with a caseworker to start the application process. A caseworker will be reaching out to you as soon as possible to complete an interview and complete your application. This program requires verification of your current situation and signatures from both the applicant and the landlord when rental assistance is requested.
